Sustainability remains at the core of Bouclème's values. We have always had goals and missions in place to ensure eco conscious decisions are made when it comes to our ingredients, packaging and manufacturing. Ultimately our desire is to inspire others to nourish and embrace their natural curl pattern with our clean curl care, without negatively impacting our precious planet. Join us as we take a look at what we are committed to.
All of the Aloe Vera and Shea Butter found in our formulas is always organically grown. In addition, we source Fairtrade ingredients by working closely with a cooperative in Southern Africa who are committed to biodiversity conservation and economic prosperity for rural communities. These ingredients are Mafura Butter, Marula and Mongongo Oil.
Mafura Butter - traditionally known for its soothing properties, and most popular for conditioning hair. This nourishing butter also provides softness and shine.
Marula Oil - an incredibly moisturising oil and rich is natural antioxidants.
Mongongo Oil - this oil is rich in omega 6 which is great for hydration and cell renewal. It's also high in vitamin E and works as an antioxidant.
In 2019, we switched our bottles and tubes to biopolymer sugarcane - an up-cycled bioplastic made from renewable sources that helps reduce CO2 emissions and is recyclable. A more planet friendly option compared to traditional fossil fuelled plastic.
In 2020 we went a step further using packaging made out of 90% PCR (post-consumer regrind) in our Colour Toning Drops. PCR is made from recycled single use plastic that would otherwise end up in landfill. Right now we’re in the process of changing all our jars to 30% PCR.
Packaging doesn't just stop at products. We also bear in mind the packaging that we ship to our customers. Our orders are sent in recyclable cardboard boxes. Inside you'll find biodegradable starch-based packing peanuts. These peanuts are made from a natural, non-toxic source (corn starch). They dissolve in water (see it in action here) and can be thrown into compost piles after a single use.
Even more exciting is the installation of a biomass fuel system in the production of our products which will bring our manufacturing carbon emissions to zero by the end of 2021. This will help us take an even bigger step towards our sustainability goals as Bouclème's manufacturing will be running on green energy.
By the end of 2022, all our water waste will be filtered, going back into the system clean. Water shortage is a real issue, so having a large percentage of rainwater harvested in our manufacturing process reduces our consumption levels in a truly sustainable way. We want to replenish and support nature wherever possible, so to not deplete the planet of its natural resources.
These updates are underway - we can't wait to keep you posted on our progress!
